Goodbye Nica, hello Costa

Haley’s birthday went great and she was grateful for all of the birthday wishes and for the delicious pizza and wine dinner in Popoyo and for the excellent sunset/moonrise and all of the other things that made it a great birthday.

That mean's 33 in NBA in case you never knew.

The day after Haley’s day was our last day in Popoyo and we took full advantage by exploring a bit, surfing a bit and enjoying the beautiful place some more.

I know you are bored of Popoyo sunset, but I promise this is the last one

That night we packed up and got ready for a long day of buses. The travel day started at 549am when we walked out our front door and ended at 830 pm when we walked into the luxurious Casa de Peter and Nim in Atenas. Lucky for us there was a hot shower and a comfortable bed awaiting us. So now we are here living in luxury and eating up delicious meal after delicious meal prepared by my Uncle Peter. Our sicknesses transformed a bit, so now I have a sinus infection and Haley has a nagging cough. We’re planning on a doctor visit tomorrow if we’re not feeling better. Now we’re going to ride bikes to town and then come back and swim and then hopefully watch Monday night football and eat more of Peter’s delicious cooking.

Happy Birthday my Chela Haley

Happy birthday my angel. I love you.

Yes, it’s my beautiful wife’s birthday and for once there are no big surprises or mystery guests, just a nice luxurious day in Popoyo. Banana, Pineapple smoothie with coffee for breakfast, maybe El Toro restaurant for lunch with a dip and lounging by the pool, hopefully the clouds will cooperate for another excellent sunset for our beach run (if we feel like it) and then Rana Roja for dinner and wine. Maybe some hammock time mixed in by the beach too. I love you my darling.

these dogs were running very fast

In other, much less important, news.. we went to a nice natural  swimming pool last night with a sandy bottom sitting directly in front of the waves and watched sunset. We are feeling much better, almost all healed up from the flu or whatever it was. I surfed more. My surf buddy Francois from France came over last night and said goodbye. He even spelled out ‘bye bye’ in pieces of leaves on our doorstep when we weren’t home. A very sweet Frenchy.

Popoyo sunsets and surf

Sorry to post twice in two days, feel free to ignore. Just wanted to see if anyone had a vote on which sunset was better between last night and tonight. Also wanted to say that my new friend Francois and I went to the Popoyo reef break today and had lots of fun surfing (a left finally). Other than that, I’m getting much better (still surfing twice/day) and Haley seems like she’s seen the worst of it too. This morning she said she was dying and I don’t hear her saying that any more, so that seems better.. now pick which is better.. tonight?…

Happy Bday Sr. Squirrel, In Popoyo, caught cold

072_06

After a long long day of travel (10 min taxi to leon bus terminal, 1.5hr microbus to managua, 10 min taxi to other managua bus terminal, 1.5 hour bus to Nandaime, 3 hour bumpy bus ride from hell to Popoyo, walk 10 min)

from Leon to Popoyo, we were greeted by a good friend of our good friend Jarod, Jeff at Surfari Charters. He set us up in this beautiful house by the beach and fed us sashimi and cooked fish too. We woke up and agreed that this is a strange place. It is beautiful with a beautiful beach and estuaries and waves, but also strange in a way that is hard to describe. It is a mix of gringo developments and crumbly backpacker/surfer hotels and a few locals mixed in, but mostly just strange and beautiful.

I’ve had a small cold for the last few days, but nothing bad, and now I gave it to Haley. So now we are a both moving a bit slow, but we have the most comfortable pad in town, so at least we will be sick in luxury and not in some dirty hut somewhere. I did surf this morning too, which was fun.

Happy Bday Ken, Alex and Siena also Padre Ramos +

haley misses you very much s.

dirrrrrrrrrrrty. remember that snow?

crazy ken

Now the blog is really back. I paid some people $90 to fix it and they promise to keep it fixed for at least 1 yr. Sorry for all the trouble with the hackers and spies and evil computer people. Our plans continue to change and change again, and for the moment it looks like we will be spending some quality beach time near Popoyo, Nicaragua for the next week or so. This place is supposed to have amazing surf and beautiful beaches and not much else. Last weekend we had a big adventure up to the Padre Ramos area. One day we climbed Volcan Cosiguina, this volcano that used to be the tallest in Central America, but blew it’s top 160 years ago and now just has a beautiful lake in it’s crater and is not nearly as tall.

 Atop Cosiguina

It was a hot tough climb, but everyone made it. On the way down we happened upon the biggest rattlesnake we’d ever seen (about 5 ft long and thick as a baseball bat). We snuck by it and made it back to Jiquillio.

This picture does not do this snake justice

We also met a bunch of Olin’s good friends/family from his time hear in the Peace Corp. We came back tired and happy.

Playing in the water in Padre Ramos

There are lots more pictures in the Nicaragua section of photos too and if you care, don’t forget to read the older posts that were written while the hackers were f’ing with me.
