Goodbye Grenada

We woke up to a beautiful morning on our last day here in Grenada. The bay was prettier than ever, the clouds were arranged nicely and the breeze was also just right (that was at 7am, now it’s hot as hell).

We’ve had a great 3+ weeks here, which was enough time to become locals at a few restaurants, learn the bus system and learn where to get the good fruits, but we still have no better chance of understanding people when they speak english.

Some of the highlights of the last week include a kayak to a deserted bay on the calmest day, delicious dinners at La Sagesse, a jungle hike to Concord Falls, morning and sunset swims, regular old day-day life in Grenada, reading books and a nice trip to St. Rose nursery where we found a beautiful orchid for Mike and a bougainvillea for Wendy. We’re a little nervous that we may die of heat in Leon, Nicaragua, but otherwise we’re excited for the next destination.

Today was a rainy gray day. A few days ago I tried to improve Shorn the barber’s haircut. Haley helped.

Today the fisherman cast their net in the bay. We went for a nice run. Previously we visited Levera Beach, which is beautiful. An old friend of a friend of Haley’s, John Albanie took us to his battery where the English fought off the French and we helped clean it up a little bit before eating some nice sandwiches and swimming in the beautiful water.

We also went on a hash to Black Bay and snorkeled at Molinere Point. We only have 1 week left here and I have a feeling that we’ve been a bit spoiled up until now. After the hash we saw our first sunset.

Tonight we will most likely visit Babe’s Tropical Flavours for the 3rd time.  Also we read Odd Thomas (i like it, haley didn’t read it yet) and In the Woods (nicely written, but not recommended).  Haley also read Grace Eventually and says ‘it might have been the best book i ever read’, but i’ve seen her exaggerate before so beware.

Happy 60th Jo + More Grenada

Happy birthday Aunt Jo. We hope you had a great one.

always winning

As promised, not much has happened lately. We did have one day at Bathway beach when it rained very hard.

Just before a very hard rain at Bathway (bat-way) Beach

I just got a 4$ haircut and I have a feeling Shorn the barber had never cut a white man’s hair before, but he was a nice guy and had a great view out to the Atlantic. Our friends Sue and Martin left today. Some nice English people who we had become friends with here at La Sagesse. We swim da bay at least once a day and usually twice. Haley has lots of mosquito bites on her ankles. We celebrated Mike’s granddaughter’s 5th birthday and she had a great time. We set a new bus record of 22 people.

Happy #5 Soriyah

Life in Grenada (& Haley’s First Post)

We are settling into Grenadian life and the simple life easily and happily.  Having been here a week now we have kind of a routine going. Our days start with a morning swim of La Sagesse Bay with our amazing host and some ex-pats in the community, and then sometimes we take trips to town to shop, do “chores” (e.g., health insurance, bills back home, checking emails, etc.) and exploration.  Recent highlights are feeding the Mona monkeys, “cliff” jumping (according to me – Gabe wouldn’t agree it was really a cliff) off a waterfall, finding the best Roti’s (local curry wraps) in every town, buying groceries at the local market while everyone tries to entice you to their stall, and the local Friday night BBQ  and Oil Down in our town, DJ included.

We get around the island on the local buses – which are an incredibly cool way to travel.  They are the size of large minivans and we have experienced being squished in up to 19 people at a time – at midday where it averages about 85 very humid degrees.  With the local people traveling in this way as they go about their daily lives, it is an amazingly intimate experience to watch and share as they help each other in and out, passing forward or back through the bus all their fellow riders’ belongings which range from bags of groceries to a new curtain rod to a baby.

only 18 people on this one

The Grenadian people seem grateful for the lives they have on this paradisiacal island.  Everyone keeps telling us to “enjoy”, and we keep enjoying.  And we miss you. Enjoy!

p.s. check out the Grenada album in the ‘photos’ part of the blog for lots more pics

Grenada 3 days in

Hello my good friends. The computer is becoming less and less appetizing, and truth be told there is not much excitement here and probably won’t be for the next 20 days so my posts may be sparse for a bit. We’ve settled into our room at La Sagesse Nature Preserve nicely. The people here seem to be very nice once you start talking and very uninterested until then. For instance: we were sure that our waiter/chef tonight at Babe’s Tropical Flavor would have rather we did not show up for dinner when we first got there, but by the time we left he literally made us promise to call him when we got home (10 minute walk) to make sure that we were safe. Some of the highlights include: swimming lots every day, reading on the beach, kayaking (hopefully will moonlight kayak soon), running along the coast and reading on the beach. Lowlights include: mosquito invasion last night and being very hot very often. I think we’re going to look for monkeys or waterfalls tomorrow. mi ah guh guh
